ACT NRM Plan Plan for managing the natural resources of the ACT

This plan has been compiled by the ACT Natural Resource Management Council in partnership with the ACT scientific and natural resource management communities, and ACT and Australian governments.

The Council is a non-statutory advisory committee to the ACT Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development. The Council's operations are supported through the Australian Government's Caring for our Country Initiative and ACT Government complementary funding by staff from the ACT Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate. The Council works with the ACT and Australian governments to deliver national natural resource management funding programs in the ACT.

Healing the land with food, medicine

Yurung Dhaura – meaning Strong Earth – is the name of the four-person Aboriginal land management team working in the Cotter River Catchment, to help restore this largely native timbered catchment, following the Canberra Fires of 2003.

The two-year Caring for the Cotter Catchment project is funded under the Caring for our Country program and hosted within the Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate in partnership with the Territory and Municipal Services Directorate.

As part of the project the team are planting native trees in the Cotter River catchment in partnership with the ACTEW Water, Enlarged Cotter Dam Biodiversity Offsets (ECDBO) plantings. 

ACT Natural Resource Management Regional Investment Strategy

Wednesday 17 October 2012 the ACT NRM Council held a forum to review projects funded under the 2011-13 Regional Investment Strategy (RIS) and to discuss the way forward for the 2013-18 RIS

ACT Weeds Forum Report

On 9 March 2012, the ACT Natural Resources Management Council hosted the ACT Weeds Forum, with support from the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country program and the ACT Government. The report from the Forum has been released in September 2012 and summarises the presentations and recommendations to come out of the ACT Weeds Forum, and proposes a pathway forward to seek engagement of key stakeholders in the implementation of Forum proposals.

Achievements in ACT NRM since 1997

Since 1997, when the Natural Heritage Trust commenced there have been an number of significant achievements in natural resource management in the ACT. This was added to by the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality in 2001, was replaced by the Caring for our Country initiative in 2008 and complemented by the Clean Energy Futures Land Package in 2011.

The ACT Natural Resource Management (NRM) Council, with support from the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country (CFOC) program, has $115,000 available for targeted control of Weeds of National Significance (WONS) within the ACT.


Council Site Inspection Tour

On Friday 25 November 2011, the Council hosted a site tour of projects being undertaken with investment from the Australian Government's Caring for our Countriy intitiative.  The Council was accompanied by representatives of the Australian Government's Land and Coasts group and the ACT Government Environment and Sustainable Development Directorate.

Caring for our Country Regional Investment: Restoration of Sub-Alpine Sphagnum Peat Bogs

Sub-alpine Sphagnum bogs are found on the higher altitudes of the Australian Alps and Tasmania. They form a highly specialised habitat that makes up only a small fraction of the landscape of south-eastern Australia.

Minister Ludwig announces appointments to Australian Landcare Council

Media Release 7 October 2010 Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, today announced the appointment of 16 new members to the Australian Landcare Council.

The Council is the Australian Government’s key advisory body on Landcare. “The Gillard Government is committed to supporting the Landcare community, which has been protecting and restoring Australia’s environment and improving the landscape for farmers for the past 20 years,”

Minister Ludwig said. “The appointment of 16 outstanding individuals with demonstrated commitment to their local environment and communities will strengthen Landcare.”

ACT NRM Council Meeting

Molonglo Catchment Group The Molonglo Catchment Group works largely in NSW and covers the catchments of the Molonglo and Queanbeyan Rivers, Jerrabomberra Creek and the urban areas of inner Canberra and Queanbeyan.

Ginninderra Catchment Group

The Ginninderra Catchment Group works in the urban areas of Belconnen, West Belconnen, Hall, Gunghalin, and the rural areas and nature reserves of the Ginninderra Creek catchment.


 

Southern ACT Catchment Group

Southern ACT Catchment Group The Southern ACT Catchment Group operates in the southern areas of the ACT covering Woden, Weston Creek, Tuggeranong, Tharwa, Tidbinbilla, the Cotter Road, Namadgi National Park and related rural areas.
